Michael “Mike” Donovan Mittlesdorf, 71, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Mike was born in Eau Claire, WI, to Marion Mittlesdorf on June 21, 1950. Growing up on a farm instilled a life-long love of animals for him. He served as a Huey helicopter tail gunner and Crew Chief in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. His favorite co-pilots were his two chihuahuas, Captain Quicksilver and Major Overkill, who saw all the action from the comfort of Mike’s pockets. Upon returning home from the war in 1970, he then spent most of his career as a self-employed contractor.
A loving family man, and a dear friend to many, Mike enjoyed gardening and fishing, and was always tinkering with anything he could find in the garage. Mike had a friendly and outgoing personality, connecting with people from all walks of life with his compassion and sense of humor. Quick to bestow you with an amusingly suitable nickname, he was generous and welcoming to everyone. His home often filled with the laughter of many friends and family.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Marion; stepfather, Larry; and brothers, Lawrence, Terry and Paul.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Cheryl; children, Brandie (George), Shannon (Matt), Michelle (Brian), Donovan (Kristina), Jodie (Rick) and Myranda (Dale); grandchildren, Jory, Ethan, Preston (Anastasia), Ella, Tanner, Riley and Ko; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Avina and Freya; brothers, Scott (Marina), Chuck (Danette), Tymme (Deb), Rodney (Ann); as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was a wonderful person, a gift to us all, and loved fiercely by his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
