Karen Christiansen Storms, 81, of Duluth, passed away on July 18, 2017, of Duluth. She was born on October 17, 1935, the daughter of Aleck and Minnie Christiansen. She graduated from East High School in 1953, and attended the Gary Gaspard School of Business. She worked at the Plaza Walgreens store as a bookkeeper, and she ran the contract post office until her marriage to Henry Storms in 1957. Together they raised four sons. She was active in the Mrs. Jaycees for a number of years, including serving as President for a year and a half. In 1968, she went to work for the Duluth Post Office as a part-time clerk. She became a regular clerk in 1970, and was promoted to supervisor in 1977. In 1980, she was officer-in-charge in the Superior Post Office for a period of eight months, and in 1982, she was promoted to Postmaster in Bemidji. She remained there until her retirement in 1992. While in Bemidji, she served in a number of organizations. She was secretary of the Bemidji Rotary Club, President of the Friends of the Library, and Vice President of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She moved back to Duluth in 1994, where she remained until her death. Karen enjoyed doing puzzles, feeding birds, working on East class reunions, and working out at Anytime Fitness. Karen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alan; sister, Betty; and grandson, Ryan Lawrence. Karen is survived by her sons, James (Lynne) of Pickerington, OH, Scott (Brenda) of Duluth, Steven (Deborah) of Cave Creek, AZ, and Gary (Racheal) of Sabin, MN; grandchildren, Michael (Katherine), John, Katherine, Gregory (Jenny), Rachel, Kenny (Amanda), Megan (Monty), Brianna, Austin, and Joseph; many great-grandchildren; nephew, John (Roberta) Christiansen; and great friends Mary and Dick Scheibe, Jerry Hurst, Carla Gamradt, Kathy Mills, and Marie. VISITATION: 12 pm on Saturday, July 22nd at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown, with a memorial service to follow at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to St. Luke's Hospice. The family would like to thank the staff of the Marywood Unit of the Benedictine Health Center and the St. Lukes hospice staff for their outstanding care.
