Josef Hanzlik, 89, of Duluth, passed away peacefully at Benedictine Living Community on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 with his family was by his side.
Josef was born August 4, 1933 in a small town in Repede, Hungary. Josef came to America when he was 22 years old. He was a boxer and came very close to being in Germany Olympics. He came to Chicago first and started boxing professionally then moved to Duluth, in 1957 he started boxing in the Duluth Armory on London Road. He worked at Fitgers Brewery and became the brewmaster. In 1972 the brewery closed because of the freeway was coming through so he went to work at University of Minnesota Duluth. He was in the Army National Guard, retiring after many years. He loved fishing and gardening and making sauerkraut. He especially loved spending time with his family.

Josef was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Rosalia Hanzlik; and his brother from Germany.
Josef leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Marianne; sons, Michael (Tammy) Hanzlik and Chris (Karen) Hanzlik; grandchildren, Brooke and Brandon; and great-grandchildren, Beauden, Breccen and Willow.
Visitation to be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, Sept. 21st at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 AM. Military Honors will be held at 1:00 PM at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery - Duluth in Saginaw.
