John Folke Johnson, age 96, passed away on Saturday, February 25th. John emigrated from Sweden as a young boy with his family and settled in Duluth. John was a graduate of Denfeld High School, Duluth Jr. College, Dunwoody Institute, and the University of Minnesota; and a Navy veteran of WWII. He spent his career working first for General Electric then for Minnesota Power as an Electrical Engineer. John was an active member of First Lutheran Church and served in many ways including council leadership and teaching. John also gave back to his community by serving on the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, board of Goodwill Industries, and a consultant for the University of Minnesota Duluth Engineering Department. In 1984, John received the Volunteer of the Year award by the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. In retirement, as through his whole life, John stayed active by participating in sports and fitness; was an avid reader; a culinary dabbler and loved visiting with his many friends and family. His family wishes to thank his wonderful caretaker/nurse/friend, Amy, and the attentive, caring staff at St. Luke's Hospital Hospice center who made his last few days peaceful and comfortable. John was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Margaret Braley and Agda Leksen. John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol; children, Lisa (Matt) McPherson, and Erik (Elsie) Johnson; grandchildren, Kjerstin, Benjamin and Luke; sister, Elaine Paulson; and nieces and nephews. VISITATION: 10 am on Thursday, March 2nd at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior Street, with a Celebration of Life at 11 am.
