James “Jim” Richard Johnson, 97, of Duluth, passed away Friday, August 27, 2021, at Solvay Hospice House surrounded by his family.
James was born July 11, 1924 to Samuel and Bessie Johnson. He graduated from Denfeld High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was a veteran of the United States Air Corps.
James was united in marriage to Jean A. Facchin on June 24, 1950. They made their home in Duluth raising four children. He loved crossword puzzles, taking walks, coffee, and his family.
James worked as an English teacher at Duluth East High School. He was one of the teachers you remember long after you graduate and made an impression on many students. After his retirement in 1986, he would often be approached by a former student saying “Mr. Johnson? You probably don’t remember me but you were my teacher and you were my favorite.”
He will be remembered for his infectious, optimistic personality, as well as his compassion and kindness. He was always smiling, joking, laughing, and could find the joy in any situation.
James was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and his wife, Jean.
James is survived by his daughters, Janet Johnson, Debbie (Jack) Williams and Karen Lawrence; son, James T. Johnson; grandchildren, Jennifer (Christopher) Bigler and Robert Lawrence; great-granddaughter, Luisa Bigler; and many relatives and friends.
Special thanks to the staff at Solvay Hospice House for their compassionate care.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Solvay Hospice House or the Duluth East High School Foundation.
