James "Jim" Burud Obituary

James “Jim” Harry Burud, devoted husband, father and grandpa, peacefully passed away at Solvay House on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

Jim was born to Harry and Tena (Claveau) Burud in Duluth, MN on February 17, 1934. He went to Central High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Barbara Olson, while singing in the school choir. They both graduated in the class of 1952, and married shortly after on September 10, 1955. Jim enlisted in the Air Force four years after graduation where got into weather and had a radio show and was stationed in places such as Illinois, Virginia, and Iwo Jima. After 4 years enlistment, he separated from the service and sought employment with the National Weather Service right in Duluth, MN. For the next 36 years, he had a fulfilling career with the weather service and would so proudly say, “Where else can someone get paid for being wrong most of the time”.

He retired at 55 to enjoy life. After retirement, Jim remained highly active with volunteer service, which included: Duluth Playhouse for 30 years, and boy did he enjoy the musicals; St Mary’s Garden Café for 15 years, where he got his supply of free soup crackers; Salem Lutheran Church as long-lasting member of 63 years, where he sang in the choir and was actively involved in the Men’s Group; and his local American Legion Post 71, where he enjoyed activities and sang in mixed choirs. He also spent his time travelling and spending time at his cabin residence on Whiteface Reservoir. His love for music and singing started with high school choir and lead to 50 years singing in church choir and performing in professional groups such as the Muriel Lindor Choir, American Legion Choir, and some of his most treasured experiences with the Superior Singers Group. Jim’s other passions were fishing and wood working. He could always be found at Burud’s Lakeshore Lodge on Whiteface Reservoir or in his garage all winter making wooden yard decorations. His greatest joy was his wife Barb and his family, especially his 4 grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barb; children, Laurie (Mark) Meagher of Proctor, David (Lori) Burud of Atlanta, Georgia, and Daniel (Lani) Burud of Proctor; grandchildren, Michael Meagher, Molly Meagher, Lyndsay (Tyler Schubert) Burud, and Meggan (Mason Kraskey) Burud; brother, John Burud; sister-in-law, Doris Degaetano; and many nieces.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Brandy, Meredyth, Amanda and Barry from Hospice Home Care, and Solvay Hospice Staff.

Visitation to be held at 11 am on Monday, August 9th at Salem Lutheran Church, 4715 Hermantown Rd, with Memorial service to follow at 12 pm. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.
