Beverly "Bev" Matuszak Obituary

Beverly “Bev” Jean (Holmberg) Matuszak, 81, of Virginia, MN, passed away unexpectedly on February 12, 2024, at Essentia.

Bev was born in Duluth, MN to Alfred Holmberg and Lucille Anderson on October 16, 1942. She attended Alborn High School, where she was named “Queen of Hearts” because of her good heart and helpful, caring attitude towards others, graduating in 1960. She worked at Sears in Duluth for the next two years, then moved on to be the secretary at AlBrook High School in Saginaw, MN, for over 30 years (which was convenient for her children who all graduated from AlBrook while she was there). Bev married William “Bill” Raymond Matuszak on September 15, 1962, at St. Philip’s Church in Saginaw, and they celebrated 46 years together before Bill’s passing in 2008. Bill and Bev owned and operated a small country tavern/store (appropriately named “Bill & Bev’s”) for many years in the late 70s/early 80s and it was a place that always felt welcoming to everyone in the Saginaw community. Families would gather to celebrate, or commiserate, after AlBrook football games, and Sunday afternoons would find Bev working behind the bar while Bill prepared some chili for hungry patrons during Vikings football games.

Bev enjoyed so many activities, from bowling in leagues in Cloquet (where she also recruited her daughter, Brenda, to join for a few years) to embroidery, knitting, and stamping greeting cards for every occasion. She loved attending Twins games with her daughter and grandson. She showed off her performing talents as part of the popular local singing group Family and Friends. But her favorite activity by far was attending all her children’s activities, from sports to plays to cheering on her sons Brian and Bruce at the Cove Cabaret in Superior for the Air Band Contest Finals in 1984. She continued that family devotion by attending many of her grandchildren's activities, the last one being her grandson Jase’s play at the Duluth Playhouse last fall. Nothing made her happier than seeing her children and grandchildren doing what they loved. Bev was a devoted Catholic, but when she wasn’t playing the organ at her church, she would volunteer to play at local Lutheran churches. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital, was an election official, rang bells for the Salvation Army, and lots more. Bev was an angel long before she left for heaven.

There are far too many wonderful stories to share about such a wonderful person. Please feel free to share yours with each other today, or whenever Bev enters your thoughts. For sure, that memory will immediately be paired with a lovely smile. Just like Bev’s. “Love to all!”

Bev was preceded in death by her husband, William Matuszak; father, Verner Ostman; mother, Lucille (Anderson) Ostman; sister, Janice Nelson; and nephew, Joel Ostman.

Bev is survived by her sons, Brian (Sue) Matuszak, Bruce (Tami) Matuszak, and Bradley (Sara) Matuszak; daughter, Brenda (David) Risdon; sister, Linda (John) Valla; grandchildren, Pierce (Eden) Risdon, Thomas (Gabriela) Matuszak, Blake Matuszak, Kaylee Matuszak, Tianna Clayton, Jase Matuszak, Kason Matuszak, Avasa Norris, and Sean Dre Matuszak; great-grandchildren, Zion Matuszak and baby girl Matuszak due later this year; brothers, Jim Ostman and Roger (Kathy) Ostman; and brother-in-law, Ronald Nelson.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Essentia and The Waterview Pines.
