Betty Mae (Westlund) Hietala, age 92, of Esko, Minnesota went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, September 10, 2018. Her loving family was by her side as she passed away at home.
Betty was born December 14, 1925, in Duluth, Minnesota to Hulda and Albert Westlund. Betty graduated from Morgan Park High School. After graduation, she worked at Cargill, Inc. until her marriage to Rodney Hietala.
Betty and Rodney first met in confirmation at Salem Covenant Church, Duluth, and were married there on November 4, 1950. She was very involved with her Salem family through teaching Sunday School, Pioneer Girls, and working in women's ministries. Throughout her lifetime, she remained committed to building and maintaining relationships with all ages. Betty loved to entertain, showing hospitality to all. She also loved to camp with family and friends and looked forward to their winters with both old and new friends in Arizona.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
Betty is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Rod; children, Susan (Jim) LeVahn, Stephen (Betsy) Hietala, Paul Hietala, Gail (Jon) Fuenning, and John Hietala; 19 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
VISITATION: 10 am on Saturday, September 15th at Salem Covenant Church, 339 N 59th Ave W, Duluth, with memorial service to follow at 11 am. Betty asks that any memorials be donated to Salem Covenant Church or Covenant Park Bible Camp (in Mahtowa).
