Barbara Garnett Obituary

Barbara A. (Bloom) Garnett, 88, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away on March 22 at Elysian Senior Homes of Duluth.

Barbara was born in Cumberland, Wisconsin to Ernest Botvid Bloom and Ellen (Markstrom) Bloom on July 19, 1933.

She graduated from Eau Claire High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and was the class valedictorian.  She went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Barbara taught elementary school in Eau Claire and was later hired in Duluth as a full time teacher.  After having her children, she returned to the classroom as a much requested substitute.  Her passion for teaching, both as a classroom teacher and substitute, spanned a total of 38 wonderful and memorable years.

She enjoyed many pastimes during her retirement years, and bowling with her husband Don was among them.  They also enthusiastically enjoyed taking many bus tours all across the country, with the Branson, MO Christmas shows being among their very favorites.  Moreover, Barbara was an accomplished painter and watercolor artist as well as a calligrapher and inscribed many Confirmation certificates for the young people at her church.

Barbara was active in many organizations at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, including the church council, the quilting group, circles, serving as a lay reader, and baking a variety of goodies for fellowship time following the services.  She was an excellent baker and will be remembered by family and friends for her delectable pies, rolls, and cookies.  The neighborhood children fondly called her “The Cookie Lady.”

She was a member of Lakeside AARP, serving as their secretary for many years.  A long time member of the Lakeshore Auxiliary, Barbara was the president for a year with the Port City Woman of the Year celebration.

Barbara often told stories about living with her family in Chicago during World War II, including her friendship with neighbor Billy Wrigley (Wrigley Gum) and getting to ride his bicycle.  She had great fun!

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ellen.  She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Don; sons Robert and special friend Marilee Johnson of Roseville and William (Paula Leland) of Hermantown; other loving relatives and friends; and special longtime neighbors, Judy Scott and Ann Larson.

The family wishes to thank the Hospice Organization of Essentia for their compassion and care.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Highway, Hermantown, MN.  The funeral service, also at Sunrise, will be Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
