Obituary

Allen David Wiens, 94, of Duluth, passed away on August 22, 2020 in St. Luke’s Hospital.

Allen was born in Jeffers, MN on January 14, 1926 to Ella and David Wiens. They moved to Duluth, where he lived his entire life.

Bored with school, he went on a fishing trip with friends to Ely, MN. He had a blind date with Louise Alice Harvat and, every day of his life he would tell you, he fell madly in love. He served in the U.S. Navy, had many jobs, and after getting a college degree, Louise moved to Duluth to find employment. They met when they were both sixteen and got married six years later on July 23, 1949.

Allen retired from the Road and Bridge Dept. of South St. Louis County on February 28, 1989. Allen was a big sports fan from the beginning, the Vikings name was on clothing, and all he bought. He won trophies in archery, bowling, and cribbage. Even at age 94, he still seldom lost to a partner in cribbage.

He and Louise built a kayak they enjoyed. Later, they had a camper that they pulled across the country. His wife was a history and reading enthusiast, and they explored and visited all the great places of this country.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Leotrice Lev.

Allen is survived by his wife of 71 years, Louise; son, Mark (Mary); daughter, Margo (Matthew) Anderson; grandsons, Christopher (Cassie Scarlett) of Woodbury and Eric (Jana) of Apple Valley; great-granddaughters, Alice and Wendy; sister, Verdella Jacobson of Duluth; brother Marvin (Doris) of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Rose Leslie of St. Paul; brother-in-law, Albert Harvat of Tower; and many nieces and nephews.

Allen was a life-long member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Per his request, no services to be held.
