Ronald "Ron" Keith Suomela, 81, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018, in his home with his love by his side. Ron was born to Aatos and Jean (Stevens) Suomela in Superior, WI, on May 2, 1937. He grew up in Hermantown and graduated from Hermantown High School in 1955. He joined the National Guard after high school and served until he retired in the 80's. Ron wore many hats and worked as an electrician, business owner of Oakland Radiator, constable, road supervisor, as well as many community service positions such as a volunteer firefighter for Fredenberg Township. He had a plethora of hobbies, but he especially loved restoring '63 Chevy Imapalas. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Richard. Ron is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janis; children, Lloyd Thompson, Ron (Sherri) Thompson, Cindy Mattson, Doug (Linda) Thompson, Jim Thompson, Robert Suomela, and Tracy (Ken) Arola; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Janice (Wally) Freitag; and many nieces and nephews. VISITATION: 10 am on Monday, Jan. 7th at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with memorial service to follow at 11 am.
