Robert "Schammy" Schamberger, 74, of Esko, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. He was born November 7, 1943, in Chicago, IL to John Schamberger and Augusta (Muehlefelder) Keirna. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1961 and was stationed in North Africa where he served in the Military Police Canine Unit. In 1963, he was relocated to Duluth, Minnesota which he made his permanent home. In 1967, he joined the Duluth Police Department and was a dedicated officer until he retired in 1990. After his retirement, he went to work for Arrowhead Security and later Voyageur Bus Company where he especially enjoyed driving "his kids".
Schammy was truly one of a kind. He had the biggest heart and a childlike spirit. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing softball with the Thompson Amoco team, representing the DPD at Pistol Shooting competitions and driving stock car at the Proctor Speedway. Later his time was spent at Namedi golf course, Country Lanes Bowling Alley and going out with his Fish Fry Group.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Keirna; and beloved wife of 43 years, Karen (Boe).
He is survived by his children, Heidi (Brett Lisiecki) Olsen of Proctor, MN, Rob Schamberger, JR. of Lakeville, MN, and Kari (Daren) Severson of Esko, MN; grandchildren, Travis, Kyle and Lars Olsen, Nolan and Izzy Schamberger, and Erik and Sarah Severson; great-grandchildren, Cayden and Callie Olsen; brother, Ronald (Laurie) Keirna of Janesville, WI; sister, Christine Walsh of Woodstock, IL; and several nieces and nephews who were very special to him.
The family has decided not to have a memorial service. Instead they ask that you take a moment to share a story about Schammy or just share some thoughts on what he meant to you on his Caring Bridge page https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/schammy
