Robert "Bob" Edward Olson, 89, of Duluth, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2019 at Keystone Bluffs in the company of his family. He was born on December 10, 1929 in Duluth, MN to Theodore and Mae Olson.
Bob was raised and attended school in Duluth and joined the United States Marines, serving in B Company of Duluth. He was proud to be one of the Chosin few who served and survived the Chosin Reservoir Campaign during the Korean War. He stayed in the Marines until joining the 148th Air National Unit of Duluth, until retiring from military service. He worked for the U.S. Steel plant in Duluth, retiring from there when the plant closed. He also worked for 3M in the cities. Bob attended many Marine Corp reunions with his wife, Donna, and Semper Fi brothers, and was very proud to be involved with the Korean Memorial on the Lakewalk. He was a member of the VFW Post 137, American Legion, and D.A.V. He was a past U.S. Steel Local 1028 Chairman, WLSSD Board Member, and Duluth City Councilman.
Bob enjoyed spending time at the cabin with his family, fishing, and hunting. Bob and Donna spent winters in Arizona during their retirement years.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Donna Olson; loving daughter, Sharon; and daughter-in-law, Randa Olson.
Bob is survived by his sons, Steve (Karen Rinta) of Eagan, MN, and Scott Olson of Duluth, MN; grandchildren, Tara, Stacey and Maria all of Maple Grove, MN; great-grandchild, Jax; sister-in-laws, Helen Hinks and Bess Morrison both of Duluth, MN; and many other family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Keystone Bluffs, V.A. Hospital Clinics, and the St. Luke's Hospice team for their care of Bob.
Visitation for Bob and Donna will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 27th at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with combined memorial service to follow at 11:00 am. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in MPLS. In lieu of flowers, memorials to D.A.V. preferred.
