Obituary

Richard Vernon Van Reese, age 92, of Hermantown, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, at Ecumen Lakeshore in Duluth, Minnesota.

Richard was born on August 3, 1934, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Henry and Florence Van Reese. A proud graduate of Duluth Central High School, Richard spent his life working hard, serving his country, and creating lasting memories with family and friends.

Richard proudly served in the Minnesota Air National Guard, retiring as a Master Sergeant (MSgt) in 1975. He also dedicated 30 years to Minnesota Power, where he retired as a Cost Engineer in 1992.

Richard had a lifelong love of camping, traveling, and the great outdoors. As a longtime member of the Good Sam Club, he enjoyed exploring new places, gathering around campfires, and sharing adventures with his children and fellow camping enthusiasts. These experiences created many cherished memories and lasting friendships over the years.

A remarkably talented craftsman, Richard had a special gift for turning his ideas into reality. He designed and built beautiful boats and campers entirely from scratch, combining creativity, patience, and exceptional attention to detail. His craftsmanship was so impressive that one of his campers was featured in Trailer Life magazine in 1985. His creations were a source of pride and a reflection of the ingenuity and determination that were so much a part of who he was.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Sally Van Reese; his brothers, Gerald and Ken Van Reese; and his sister-in-law, Hazel Van Reese.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff (Cindy) and Gary (Terri) Van Reese; his grandchildren, Dan (Karly Hallin) Van Reese, Sara (Andrew) Armeli, Brandon (Kayla) Van Reese, and Tyler Van Reese; his great-grandchildren, Aegan and Caison Armeli, and Hudson Van Reese; and his step-grandchildren, Alissa (Brian Hill) Ganser and Kaylee (Steph Tsalma) Ganser. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special and heartfelt thank-you to JeanAnne Kinney, whose caring friendship brought companionship, happiness, and comfort to Richard’s life in his later years. Her kindness and friendship meant so much to him and will always be remembered with gratitude.

Richard will be remembered as a kind and caring man whose warmth, friendship, and quiet generosity touched the lives of many. As he faced health challenges in his later years, he was surrounded by people who went out of their way to offer kindness, compassion, and support. His family is deeply grateful to all those who cared for him, brightened his days, and helped make his final years more comfortable and meaningful.

A private family gathering to celebrate Richard’s life and the memories he leaves behind will be held at a later date.
