Phyllis Marie Miller, 97, of Duluth, MN passed away on November 27, 2024 at Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth.
Phyllis was born in Barron, WI to Edward and Mathilda (Bilse) Miller on August 17, 1927. She attended Prairie Farm (WI) High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Stout Institute (now University of Wisconsin – Stout). She worked as a teacher for various educational institutions including: Colby (WI) High School, University of Minnesota-Duluth, and Duluth ISD #709 (Night classes, Secondary Vocational Center, Denfeld High School). While teaching in Colby, Phyllis met her future husband, Ray Miller.
Phyllis enjoyed gardening, traveling, and especially quilting. She made and gave away many beautiful quilts. She gave generously of her time to help Vietnam refugees and UMD international students feel comfortable and supported in their new home. She was a member of St. John's Free Lutheran Church in Duluth.
In their retirement, Phyllis and Ray helped found the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate and helped build houses in Tucson, AZ. They were also dedicated volunteers for Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers, providing hospitality, assistance and friendship to the many crew members who come to the Twin Ports aboard ships.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Miller; and brothers, Werner Miller and Wendell Miller.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Kerry) Carter of Duluth, and Ann (Randy) Simonson of New Richmond, WI; son, Allen (Lorraine) Miller of Deer River, MN; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Keystone Bluffs, Viewcrest Health Center, and St. Luke's Hospice for their care and kindness for Phyllis.
A private memorial service will be held. Interment at Bethany Cemetery in Hermantown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers, PO Box 1630, Duluth, MN 55816.
Phyllis loved her Lord and showed that love through her hospitality and kindness.
