Orvin Michael Hieb age 87, of Duluth passed away on October 4, 2013 in St. Luke's Hospice. He was born on February 13, 1926 to David and Ida Martel Hieb in Hosmer, South Dakota. In 1944, he graduated from Leola Senior High School in South Dakota. In 1947 Orv graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota majoring in Education. After completing his education he married Alice Aman in South Dakota. Orvin and Alice moved to Duluth in 1957 and he taught at Endion and Homecroft Elementary School. He enjoyed and devoted 42 years teaching his students music and dance. During his teaching years, in 1960, Orv completed his Masters of Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. One of his favorite projects was to teach his students how to make sausage. During his teaching career, Orv enjoyed working for the North Shore railway as conductor for ten years. He retired from teaching in 1991.Throughout his lifetime Orv loved music and played the guitar and banjo. From 1991 until 2005 Orv and Alice enjoyed wintering in Arizona. He was a member of the Elk's Lodge #133 for 35 years and was an exalted ruler from 1985-1989, and was a life time member of the American Legion Post #28. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Haven and Dr. Stephan Long for their loving care of Orv. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Howard, and is survived by Alice, his wife of 64 years, two sons David (Pam)and Daniel, and two daughters Karen Rogge and Karla (Dave) Slovick, four grandchildren David, Joseph, Jill and Brian, and five great-grandchildren, four sisters Winona, Jeanette, Della, and Sherry, and a brother LeRoy. Visitation 11:00am until the 12:00 pm funeral service at Sunrise Funeral Home on Thursday October 10, 2013. Military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Rev.
