Obituary

Orval Merlin Chalman, 96, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022 at Essentia Health St Mary's Clinic in Duluth.

Orval was born a set of twins in Duluth, MN on February 1, 1926 to Olger and Christine Chalman. He attended Duluth Denfeld High School and enlisted in the United States Navy, heroically serving in WWII and the Korean Conflict.

Orval worked at Western Electric, Duluth Superior Transit, Superwood and retired after many years of service from the MN State Employment Office in 1985.

He married the love of his life, Doris Chalman on March 12th of 1948, sharing 67 precious years of marriage until her passing in 2015.

Orval enjoyed traveling with family and friends over the years, and volunteering at the Holy Cross and Chris Jensen Senior Dining programs. There was nothing he couldn't fix, and he was well loved for his quick wit and uncanny humor. Known for his favorite saying, "Well, I suppose" (when it was time to go), and "The best tree is the family tree," Orval loved and took incredible care of his family. He was patient, clever, a problem solver and stubborn to a fault...that was all that Norwegian in him! He was also well known for his delicious homemade silta and rosettes at Christmas time. Orval and Doris resided in the Duluth Heights neighborhood for many years, and cherished the wonderful memories and close friendships shared with their neighbors.

Orval was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; two infant sons; daughter, Shelly (David) Minotte; parents; and eight siblings.

Orval will be greatly missed by his daughter, Kimberly (John) Remington; grandchildren, Kristina Minotte, Seth (Kayla), Sarah and Ethan (Samantha) Remington; great-grandchildren, Landen, Wyatt, Tate, Gracelyn and Ivy Remington; along with his beloved nieces.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the incredible health workers at Heritage Haven, who loved and took great care of Orval for the past three and a half years.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 1st at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with Funeral Service to follow at 3:00 PM.
