Obituary

Mary Foster Farrar, age 93, of Northfield passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Three Links Care Center.  Mary was born in Duluth, Minnesota on November 5, 1922, the daughter of Lawrence and Josephine (Kaneski) Coughlin.  She attended elementary school in Sawyer, Minnesota and graduated from Carlton High School in 1940.  Mary was united in marriage to Gerald Foster on March 5, 1943.  While Gerald was serving in the armed forces Mary lived on the family farm with her parents.  It was in the service that Gerald met Hank Williams.  The three became good friends over the years.  After Gerald's service, the couple returned to Duluth.  There Mary began working for Zinsmaster's Baking Company.  She was very proud of the years she worked there and after 31 years retired in 1984.  Gerald passed away in 1980.   In 1990 she married Lloyd Farrar, a long-time friend that she had known while growing up, and the couple lived in the Twin Cities area.  Lloyd passed away in 2004.  Mary returned up North where her sister Elizabeth lived in a high rise in Cloquet.  The two spent time together every day.  After Elizabeth passed away, Mary moved to Northfield in 2010 to be closer to her son David.  Mary entered the Three Links Care Center in January 2016.  Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and could crack jokes with the staff at the care center.  The staff enjoyed having Mary with them and were so good to her.  Mary loved crocheting and made beautiful Christmas ornaments and Barbie doll clothes for some of the grandchildren.  She also liked to read romance novels. Mary is survived by her children, Thomas (and Thi) of Surprise, AZ, Steven (and Mary Ann) of Archbold, OH, David (and Nancy) of Northfield, Teresa Johnson of Virginia, Deborah (and Bob) Renaud of Proctor, Daniel (and Deb) of Lake City, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Foster of Saginaw, MI.  19 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren also survive her.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gerald, her second husband, Lloyd, a son, Francis "Frank", a grandson, Richard, son-in-law, Lynn Johnson, three brothers, Harvey, Robert and Patrick and her sister, Elizabeth. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016, beginning at 11 AM at Sunrise Funeral Home in Duluth.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.  Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband Gerald at Sunrise Cemetery in Duluth. Arrangements by Benson & Langehough Funeral Home, Northfield and Sunrise Funeral Home and Cemetery, Duluth.  www.northfieldfuneral.com
