Kenneth "Kenny" Richard Olson Jr, 73, of Duluth MN and longtime resident of Caribou Lake, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018.
Ken was born May 9, 1944, to Margaret and Kenneth 'Bud' Olson Sr. He was raised and attended school in Proctor and Lakeside. A 1962 East High School graduate, Ken enlisted in the Navy in the same year. He served on the USS Manatee in the South China Sea during the Vietnam War, replenishing supplies and fuel to the ships on patrol in that area. After Ken was honorably discharged, he married Ann M. Baxter and enjoyed the pleasure of her company for the next 48 years. Ken worked for Northwestern Bell/Qwest for 39 years, and was active in the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 7214. Ken had a great talent for making beautiful wooden birdhouses. He liked giving these special works of art to friends and family. Ken also enjoyed being outdoors to fish, hunt, and pick agates.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Zieglar and Kenneth R. Olson, Sr.
Ken will be missed by his wife, Ann B. Olson; daughters, Heather Olson, Michelle Olson, and Mara (Joel) Spaeth; son, Erin Olson; six grandchildren, Danika Olson-Brown, Joshua Olson, Patrick Olson, Daniel Spaeth, Hope Spaeth, and Ellie Spaeth; sisters, Margaret (John) Freeman and Betty (Tom) Negri; and brothers, Mark (Mardee) Zieglar and Craig (Holly) Olsen.
VISITATION: 1:30pm Wednesday, March 14th at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown, with memorial service to follow at 2pm. A private burial at a later date in Canosia Township Cemetery.
