Obituary

Judith "Judy" M. Schuman, 79, of Duluth, MN passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Lewy body dementia on Sept. 22nd. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren with her beloved Minnesota Vikings on TV in the background (to which they pulled out a fantastic win for her). She was born on July 12, 1940, in Keewatin, MN to John P. and Slava (Jackovich) Muhar. She graduated from Keewatin High School, attended Hibbing Community College and then went on to Bemidji State University. Judy had a love for music and played the piano whenever she could and also sang for many years in the church choir. While attending Hibbing Community College she got a "gig" that she would talk about for the rest of her life. She was asked to sing in a little back up group, exactly 3 lines, at a couple of local county fairs with a young and upcoming musician from Hibbing, Minnesota named Robert Zimmerman, who later became the famous Bob Dylan. Up until the last week of her life despite the dementia, if you asked her who her favorite musician was, the answer was always "My Bobby Dylan". In 1964 while standing up for her best friend in a wedding, she met the love of her life, Roy Schuman who was in that same wedding. They were married a year later in 1965 and moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he was serving in the U.S. Navy. Both of their children were born in Charleston. Upon Roy's separation from the Navy, they moved back to Duluth, MN, where Judy had an amazing 30 year career in Hospital Administration at St. Luke's hospital. In 2002, Judy and Roy bought a retirement home in Green Valley, AZ, where they enjoyed the beauty of Minnesota in the summers and wonderful temperatures and mountains of Arizona in the winters with many fabulous getaways to their favorite place in Hilton Head, South Carolina. During this time, Judy served as the treasurer of the Green Valley, AZ, Minnesota Club and met so many wonderful people that would become their dear friends. Judy was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Roy, who passed away in 2010. She is survived by her son, David (Terri) Schuman; daughter, Kelly (Mark) Vavra; brother, Jack (Jan) Muhar; four grandchildren that she was so very proud of, Nate and Sydney Schuman and Delaney and Claire Vavra; and her two wonderful nieces, Alexandra and Caitlin Muhar. She was adamant that we call out all of her cousins as they were so close throughout life (SMILE). On behalf of Judy's family, we would like to thank the amazing staff at BeeHive Memory Care in Duluth, Minnesota, who took such great care of her this past year (especially Sydney Schuman who at a very young age had to distinguish between grandparent and patient), as well as her very special friend who we are convinced has a first class seat in heaven (all drinks included), Mary Jo Lapcinski. AN OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATION OF LIFE at Judy's request will be held on Saturday, October 5th, from 2-5 pm at Ridgeview Country Club, 700 W. Redwing St. Duluth. She loved a good old fashioned "get together" and loved watching her golf every weekend. A private burial service will be held for the family at Sunrise Memorial Park prior to her celebration of life.
