Joann Louise (Kragh) Schmaltz, 79, of Hermantown, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026 following a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of her family. Joann was born on April 1, 1947, the daughter of Ludvig ‘Louie’ and Marie Kragh, in Minot, North Dakota. Joann lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family.

On December 26, 1973, Joann married David Jason Schmaltz. Together they shared more than five decades of family life, creating traditions and memories that will be cherished by those who knew them. They were familiar faces at Bridgeman's each morning, where family and friends were always welcome to join them for breakfast.

Joann worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for Maurices, Inc. and Susan Schober Cutshall. She was respected for her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to help others. She was the kind of person who never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need. Her selfless nature and caring heart touched the lives of many family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Joann's greatest joy in life was her family. She was the heart of every gathering and the glue that held everyone together. Holidays, birthdays, graduations, and everyday celebrations were important to her, not because of the occasion itself, but because they brought the people she loved together. She believed family should be present for life's meaningful moments, and she made it a priority to gather everyone whenever she could. Of all the roles she held throughout her life, being "Grandma" was the one she treasured most. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of her world, and she took immense pride in each of them and their accomplishments.

Joann rarely missed a sporting event, dance recital, school program, graduation, or special celebration. Whether she was cheering from the stands, applauding from an auditorium seat, or offering words of encouragement afterward, she was always there. She celebrated every achievement, comforted every disappointment, and loved her family unconditionally. Her grandchildren knew they could always count on Grandma's support, wisdom, and unwavering belief in them.

Joann expressed her love in countless ways, including carrying on the family tradition of making handmade Christmas stockings for her family. Each stocking was crafted with care and became a cherished symbol of the love, thoughtfulness, and connection she nurtured within her family. Joann leaves behind a legacy of love, connection, and family that will endure for generations.

Joann also had a lifelong love of shopping. Whether she was searching for the perfect gift, spending an afternoon browsing with family or friends, or finding something special for herself, she genuinely enjoyed the experience. She found joy in giving to others and was always on the lookout for thoughtful treasures that would bring a smile to someone's face.

Joann was preceded in death by her beloved parents; and her brother, Larry Kragh.

Joann is survived by her husband of 52 years, David Schmaltz of Hermantown; children, Becki Nelson of Hermantown, Craig (Taiahla) Schmaltz of Duluth, Tony (Jodi) Schmaltz of Duluth, and Tammy Lewis (Barry) of San Diego; cherished grandchildren, Nathan Nelson, Megan Nelson, Nicole Nelson, Elliot (Emily) Schmaltz, Mikayla Cozzi, Damion Cozzi-Schmaltz, Aviana Schmaltz, Alexis (John) McIntyre, Carly (Josh) Gould, and Alyssa Lewis; and beloved great-grandchildren, Weston and Oliver Schmaltz, and Hudson and Isla McIntyre. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Kathy Kragh, and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Aspirus Hospice, and her entire care team for the compassion, comfort, and dignity they provided throughout Joann's journey. Our family is especially grateful to Dr. Silva for her exceptional care, compassion, and dedication. Because of her expertise and commitment, Mom was able to enjoy several more meaningful years with her family, creating memories we will cherish forever.

Joann will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and unconditional love enriched the lives of all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the traditions she created, the lives she touched, and the family she loved so dearly. Her greatest legacy is the family she nurtured and the love she gave so freely.

A celebration of Joann's life will be held at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, on September 25th. Visitation to be held at 2:30 PM, with Memorial Service at 3:30 PM. Fellowship and celebration will continue at 4:15 PM at Skyline Social and Games, 4894 Miller Trunk Hwy.
