James "Jim" Leroy McMann, 83, of Duluth, MN passed away on June 15, 2022 at Viewcrest Nursing Home in Duluth with many of his loving children by his side.
Jim was born in Duluth to Thomas and Beatrice McMann on June 8, 1939. He attended high school at Duluth Central and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957. He served as a Force Recon Team Leader in Vietnam where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. In 1970 he left the USMC and returned to Minnesota and bought a small hobby farm in Brookston, MN. He reenlisted in the MN Army National Guard and served for 8 years as a recruiter winning many awards as a top recruiter in the state and nation. He also worked as an ambulance driver, in construction, corrections officer and as a security officer in the Duluth area at various times over the years. Jim spent many years as a foster parent and provided love and guidance to many children. He was an active member of both the American Legion and VFW serving in post officer positions and in the Honor Guard. Jim had a fascination for the American West and loved reading books and watching TV westerns. His humor and wit will be missed by all he came in contact with during his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine (Pridemore); son, Chopper Lewis; great-grandson, Diesel James Horton; parents; and brothers, Tom and Bill McMann.
Jim is survived and loved by his children, James (Heidi) McMann of Apple Valley MN, Jody (Doug) Kilen of Proctor MN, Paula (Steve) Kircher of St. Paul MN, Jeanne (Tim Van Hout) Schaefer of Proctor MN, Julie (Chuck) Spindler of Cloquet MN, Rodney (Laurie) McMann of Floodwood MN, Vince (Katie) Soderlund of Sturgeon Lake MN, Balinda (Brad) Bailey of Moose Lake MN, Wendy (Lonnie Luomala) Lewis of Culver MN, and Lori Kastel of Fergus Falls MN; 22 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 3:00 PM on July 27, 2022 at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Truck Hwy, Hermantown MN, with a Memorial Service to follow at 4:00 PM. Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park, Veteran's Section. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staffs of Viewcrest Nursing Home of Duluth and Moose Lake Village/Augustana Assisted Living Facility in Moose Lake.
Dad lived for and loved passionately his family, his country, and his Marine Corps – in no particular order.
