Hope Arleen "Arlene, Arlie, Ar" (Berg) Holmes, 97, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, 2018. Hope was born in Duluth, Minnesota, January 10, 1921, to Arnold and Austrie Berg. She graduated from Duluth Central 1939, and earned her B.A. degree at St. Scholastica in 1943. In August of 1943, she boarded the bus to Fort Leonardwood MO, and married A. Verne Holmes. She entered the workforce in the late 50's as a commercial artist and designer. Her career was taking off when she was designing women's clothing for Munsingwear and found she was expected to spend some time on the east coast. She chose family over travel and went to work in 1960 for Minneapolis Public Schools as an Art teacher. She retired in 1982 from the classroom. Hope was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Verne; son, Scott; grandson, Gregory; and sister, Doty. Hope is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Kathleen) Holmes, Deborah (Malcolm) Layman, and Mark (Marjorie)Holmes; grandchildren, Scott (Christina) Holmes, Kara (Mark) Lucas, Stephenie (Rick) Labandz, Jessica Layman, Nara (Jeremy) Brunson , Gavin Layman, Sarah Holmes, Patricia (Joe) Santarius, and Julia Holmes; great-grandchildren, Cecilia, Carter, Zachary, Reid, Adler, Max, Zoe and Odin; as well as many extended family members. VISITATION: 10am Wednesday, March 7th at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with funeral service to follow at 11am. Memorials are preferred to dementia research.
