Helen M. Nygard, age 100, passed away on October 9, 2017 at River Hill Assisted Living in Duluth. She was born on December 7, 1916 on Park Point in Duluth. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1934. In 1938, she married Ernest Nygard in her family home on Park Point. In 1952 they moved their family to Pike Lake. In 1938 the Nygards started a grocery business down on Park Point and then moved to Busy Bee Grocery Store on 2nd Ave East and 2nd Street. In 1962 they relocated their business to Avenue Market on 14th and 4th street. She worked there until Ernie's retirement in 1970 and then worked at 4th Street Market until her retirement in 1980 when she and Ernie became snow birds in Florida. Helen enjoyed doing hand work such as crueling and quilting. She was a member of St. Andrews By The Lake Episcopal Church. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ernest in 1990; three brothers, Erwin, Woodrow, and John; her sister, Kathleen Cahill; her daughter, Nancy Vanneste; her sons, Thomas and Steven; and a grandson, John Vanneste. She is survived by her son; John (Annette) of Venice, FL; her daughter-in law, Cynthia of Appleton, WI; her son-in law, Richard Vanneste of Sebastian, FL; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial may be made to the Church or Talking Books Minnesota Library for the Blind. The family wishes to thank the owners and staff of River Hill Assisted Living for their loving and compassionate care. Also thank you to St. Luke's Hospice. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews By The Lake Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM on October 23 with a visitation one hour before.
