Harry Raymond Dorvinen, 79, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed into the arms of his heavenly father on October 18, 2015, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a sudden and brief illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 27, 2015, at First Covenant Church, Pastor Mark Kelly officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 26, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Funeral Home in Hermantown. Arrangements are being handled by Sunrise Funeral Home. Harry was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on December 22, 1935, to Harry and Gladys (Wilke) Dorvinen. He graduated from The Dalles (OR) High School; attended Virginia Junior College and received his DDS degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1960. He served in the Dental Corp of the United States Army from 1960-1962. Harry was a member of the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, Northeastern District Dental Society, President of the Northeastern District Dental Society, Member/Chair of the Northeastern District Peer Review Committee, Member/President of the Duluth Dental Forum Study Club, Member of the Minnesota Dental Association Peer Review Committee, Member/President of the Minnesota Board of Dentistry, President and Examiner of the Central Regional Dental Testing Service, Member/President of the American Association of Dental Examiners, Fellow of The American College of Dentists, Member of the Joint Commission of National Dental Examinations, Member of the Commission on Dental Accreditation-ADA, and Guest of Honor of the Northeastern District Dental Society. Harry was involved in the community in many ways, including: Past member/Chair-ISD 709 Board of Education-Hermantown, MN; Fundraiser-Bulldog/Rasmussen Scholarship Fund-University of Minnesota Duluth Men's Hockey Program; Recipient-Marsh Nelson Award-Service to the University of Minnesota Duluth; Board Member-First Covenant Church-Duluth, Minnesota; Member/past President-Duluth Blueline Club-Duluth, Minnesota; Member/Past President-Blood Donors of Duluth, Minnesota; Member/Past Chair-Planning Commission-Hermantown, Minnesota; Member/Past Chair-Selective Service Board-Duluth, Minnesota. Harry volunteered his time and services on dental missions trips to Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, and Honduras with Volunteers in Medical Missions. Harry was married to his lifelong love Janet (Jan) Sell for 57 amazing and wonderful years. Harry was a partner of and practiced dentistry at Piedmont Heights Dental Associates for 39 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling around the world (many have participated in the group "Harry Trips" that were organized by him throughout the years), wintering at their Florida home, supporting the UMD men's hockey program (51-year season ticket holder), socializing with his many beloved friends, and spending as much time with his children and grandchildren as he possibly could. Harry had a special gift of making anyone and everyone he came in contact with feel special in his presence. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Michael Scott, and brother Robert. Harry is survived by his wife Janet, his children Al Dorvinen, Karen Cobb, Beth (Scott) Allen, and Rodney Dorvinen; grandchildren Brandon Allen, Tanner (Katie) Cobb, Mackenzie Cobb, Taylor Allen, and Nicholas Allen; sister Lynn Olmen, sister-in-law Ann Dorvinen, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the UMD Men's Hockey Program. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, especially nurses Jessica and Joseph and Dr. Miller. The respect, care, and compassion provided to Harry and the family was beyond measure.
