Harlan L. Rathe, 95, of Virginia, MN died on Tuesday August 20, 2013 in his residence. He was born in Elbow Lake, MN on June 28, 1918 to Edwin and Mary Rathe. He married Marion Carlson in 1939. Harlan was a WWII Navy Veteran sailing on the U.S.S. Stokes; he and his four brothers were all WWII Vets who all made it back home from the war. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1981, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the lake home he had built on Fish Lake. Harlan liked to tell stories and go fishing. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa. The family wishes to thank Essentia Health Virginia Regional Medical Center/Hospice, and Dr. Craig Vickstrom. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, son Daniel, and his wife Marion. Harlan is survived by his children Duane (Kathy) Rathe of Gilbert, MN, and Barbara (Jerry) Butchart of Duluth; grandchildren Tamara, Brian, James, Stephanie, Brad, Steve, Scott, and Missy, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10AM until the 11AM Funeral Service in Sunrise Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Park.
