Gordon "Gordy" Paul Ernst, 84, of Hermantown, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family in the early morning hours of June 30, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Gordy was born on April 16, 1934 in Duluth, MN to Leonard and Martha Ernst.
Gordy attended Hermantown High School. He married the love of his life, Lois, on August 27, 1955 and they enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage. Gordy worked various jobs, sometimes holding two or three of them at a time, to raise his six children. He was employed for USS Steel, retiring after 34 years of service and was a volunteer fireman for the Hermantown Fire Department for 25 years.
Gordy was hardworking, strong as an ox, hard as nails, funny, infectiously happy, with a huge heart that gave love freely. He was a bit old-fashioned and a bit shy about taking hugs and kisses, but it didn't stop him from getting plenty. Gordy was a man of integrity, kindness, faith, and joy. Gordy dedicated his life to his family and friends, always lending a helping hand, a listening ear, wisdom, acceptance, and love. Gordy's witty sense of humor entertained all! Gordy built his home with his own two hands and enjoyed sharing his piece of the world with all who stopped in to say hello - no invitation needed.
Gordy was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Carol Dunaisky.
Gordy is survived by his wife, Lois; children, Gordon (Michael Lynch) Ernst, Gail Ernst, Gerald (Theresa) Ernst, Rory (Joan) Ernst, Tammy (Dale) Kitchenmaster, and Todd (Andrea Carrothers) Ernst; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Ernst, Sr.; sister, Janice (Rodney) Pederson; sister-in-law, Karon Engman; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and special garage buddy, Karl Kallberg.
Gordy touched the hearts of all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his physicians, Dr. Daniel Robinson, Dr. Nichole Schaefer, Dr. Sandy Popham, the nurses, nurse's aides, and staff of St. Luke's Hospital 4 West, and Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care of Gordy.
