Edwin "Ed" N. Carlson, 93, of Duluth, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Edgewood Healthcare in Hermantown. He was born on February 19, 1928 in Duluth to Nicklia and Marian (Johnson) Carlson.
At the end of WW II Ed enlisted in the Air Force where he served in Germany. After his discharge, Ed returned to Duluth where he met Betty Kiefer. They were married on July 4, 1952 and raised their three boys in Duluth.
Ed spent his working career as a sailor on ore carriers. He worked for 41 years for US Steel's Great Lakes Fleet and retired as a First Mate on the Edgar B Speer in 1987. He enjoyed travel, fishing, working in his yard, feeding the birds and the deer, and reminiscing about growing up in Duluth and his years on the ore boats.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Betty; sons, Byron (Denise) of Duluth, Blair (Barbara) of Grand Rapids and Brad of Inver Grove Heights; grandchildren, Grant, Keenan, Eliana and Brandon; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Clarence (Dorothy) of Superior, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at Edgewood and CaringEdge.
There will be a private family service at Sunrise Funeral Home. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.
