Obituary

Duane Allen Shaw, 94, of Fredenberg passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025 surrounded by his family. Duane was born August 27, 1930 to Jule and Olive Shaw. He graduated from Hermantown High School where he participated in athletics. He was the goalie on the first hockey team at Hermantown. He also played football and was a catcher for the Hawks baseball team. Duane was a veteran of the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He returned and married Hope "Toots" Johnson on July 3, 1954. Duane worked as an automobile mechanic at the Chevrolet dealerships in Duluth for 41 years. Duane and Hope had two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jeff and Penny Shaw and Rick and Lari Jo Shaw. They had four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Duane's family was his greatest legacy, what he was most proud of and cherished deeply. He enjoyed the wildlife in his backyard in Fredenberg. The daily visits of deer, turkeys, ducks, squirrels and birds gave him great pleasure. Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Hope; his parents; and 12 siblings. Duane is survived by his sons, Jeff (Penny) Shaw and Rick (Lari Jo) Shaw, all of Duluth; grandchildren, Jason (Courtney) Shaw of Duluth, Kristi (John) Reitz of Sheboygan Falls, WI, Kimberly (Ryan) Kreager of Duluth, and Ashley (Casey) Boutain of Starbuck, MN; and great-grandchildren, Jack and Julia Shaw, Stella, Quinn and Livvy Boutain and Abigail Kreager. In keeping with Duane's wishes, his life will be remembered simply and privately by his loving family. Private committal service and burial at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.
