Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Darrell Wyman Johnson, 75, of Superior, WI on June 19, 2024 at Essentia St Mary's Hospital.

Darrell was born in Minneapolis, MN to Kermit and Gloria Johnson on January 21, 1949.

He graduated high school in 1967 and then went on to earn a degree in business from Wynona State University. Darrell worked as a rehabilitation counselor for over 30 years and was an United States Army veteran.

Darrell was a kind and generous man who enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He had a heart of gold and an acceptance of all people. He enjoyed all kinds of music. Darrell liked a good adventure, anything from the thrill of roller coasters to scuba diving. Darrell was all in for anything that came his way. Darrell especially loved going on adventures with Donna. They traveled all over the world, but he especially loved Florida where they lived for 10 years and that was their favorite place. If Darrell could drive it, he would go.

Darrell was an avid fisherman. The peak of his fishing career was the infamous muskie that he caught at Pughole Lake outside of Grand Rapids MN.  Darrell was a fountain of information. He sought knowledge in all areas and loved a great debate or conversation. He was often seen as the king of jeopardy and the guy that had all of the knowledge. Darrell was also a passionate cribbage player, he loved playing, (or cheating) and he could play for hours. He enjoyed playing as much as he could even after being double skunked by Paul. This is however, was something that Darrell would never admit occurred.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Gloria Johnson; and nephews, Brandon and Evan Jacobson.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Donna; sons, Kyle (Tuesday) and Ty (Tracy); stepchildren, Keith (Melissa) Blake, Kim (Abbe) Blake and Kris (Chris) Blake; grandchildren, Sierra and Zachary Johnson; step-grandchildren, Matthew, Brooke and Zachary Arenburg and Andrew, Marley and Keenan Peak; siblings, Dennis (Mary), Debbie and Dave (Sherri); sisters-in law, Carol MacLeod and Gail (Gordy) Wolkowski; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 27th at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, with a celebration of Darrell's life at 12:00 PM and a reception to follow.

Friends and family are welcome to the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery following the celebration of life for a full Military Honors Graveside Ceremony.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Essentia Health Cancer Centre Team, especially Dr. Nikcevich and nurse Julie, who went above and beyond to ensure that Darrell received the best care possible.

Darrell will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all those that knew and loved him.
