Catherine "Cathy" Mable Scott, 87, of Duluth MN passed peacefully in her sleep at home and surrounded by family on Saturday, November 10, 2018 in Duluth, MN.
Catherine was born in Quitman Georgia to Oscar and Lucille Sims on June 19, 1931. In 1955, she met and married the love of her life, Julius Scott Sr., while he was serving in the United States Air Force. Military service took the family from MacDill AFB Tampa, FL, to Kadena AFB Okinawa, Japan. After four years overseas, the family was then transferred to Duluth AFB Duluth, MN. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Julius and Catherine chose to make Duluth their permanent home. In September of 1971 Catherine received training and was employed as a Unit Secretary for Miller Dwan Hospital until her retirement in 1996. She enjoyed traveling, her annual vegetable garden, "Goin' to the casina!", and was active in the community. She often attended events such as Duluth's annual Juneteenth Celebration, the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Dinner, and neighborhood night out block parties. She loved spending time with her family and friends. "Mother Scott" always had a smile, hug and kind word for all, especially the little ones. She cherished the company of her grandsons and any time she was able to spend with them. She was a member of the Old Timer's Club, a member of the League of Women's Voters, attended Family Freedom School and was a long-time and faithful member of St. Mark AME Church.
St. Mark AME Church has established "The Catherine M. Scott Community Service Award". This award is presented to members of the community who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of others.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Solvay House, Essentia Healthcare Hospice, and all those who helped by showing their compassion and dedication in ensuring Catherine's comfort throughout this trying ordeal.
The Scott family sincerely appreciates your prayers, sympathy and acts of kindness. They ask that you continue to pray for their family and they pray that God richly blesses each and every one of you.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Julius Scott Sr.; and brothers, Leroy, Oscar, William and Terrance Sims.
Catherine is survived by her children, Barbara Holmes of San Leandro, CA, Gail Scott of San Leandro, CA, Julius Scott Jr. of Burnsville, MN, Darryl Scott of Duluth, MN, Karen (James Cross) Scott of Burnsville, MN and Brian Scott of Duluth, MN; grandsons, Davan (Tricia) Scott of Duluth, MN and Desmond Scott of Duluth, MN; brothers, James Simms of Paterson, NJ and Frank Sims of Quitman, GA; sister, Alice Coleman of Quitman, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
