Betty Christiansen Lessard of two Harbors, formerly of Duluth, passed away the 19th of March, 2015. She was born on August 5th 1924, the daughter of Minnie and Aleck Christiansen. Betty graduated from Stanbrook Hall in 1943, she attended Duluth Business University and the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Salt Lake city, Utah. She then started Betty's Photo in Duluth and owned it for ten years. In 1955 she took over Andy's smoked fish shack at Stewart River on the North Shore of Lake Superior. She began by serving coffee and donuts to the smelters. She thought she would try it out for two weeks to see if she liked it. I quess she liked it because she stayed for 28 years. She then began serving hot dogs and hamburgers and as the business kept growing she added more to the menu including pies, which became well known throughout the country. In 2001, she published a cook book called "The Original Betty's Pies Favorite Recipes". Her book remains a best seller. Until the time of her death, she could be seen on occasion in the new Betty's Pies restaurant where she would meet former customers and sign cook books. She always enjoys visiting with them. Upon her retirement from the pie shop, she raised standard Schnauzers, one which was a champion. She traveled to Santa Barbara, California where her dog won first place in that show and then to Canada where her dog also won. It was something she had never done and she enjoyed it all. She also continued to bake pies and loved to bake bread and bring it to her neighbors. Her sister, nieces and nephews also enjoyed the benefit of her baking. Her parents, her brother Alan, her husband Lloyd and nephew Ryan preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister Karen Storms of Duluth and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Monday, April 6th at 11am at Sunrise Funeral Home 4798 Miller Trunk Highway with visitation on hour prior.
