Betty Lou Burke, 91 of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away on December 18th at Diamond Willow Assisted Living. Betty was born in Duluth to Laurence and Anna Champion on September 28, 1926. She attended Duluth Central High School. After high school she earned a license as a Beautician and ran a business with her first husband James Russell Atol. She then worked as the owner and operator of Champion Children's Home with her family for over 50 years. She enjoyed Zonta, a women's' business club for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion. Betty was the city Jacks champion. Betty was always at her best when she was helping others and always put everyone else first. She had a special relationship with her grand daughter Kelly, where they took turns taking care of each other. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Laurence and Anna Champion; her husband Jack Burke; her brother James Champion ; her sister Nancy Matter; and her great grandchild Gabriella. She is survived by her children Susan Richards; Gordy (Judy)Atol; stepchildren Patty (Charle) Place and Kevin (Debbie) Burke; Grandchildren Kelly, Dawn, Tommy, Joe, Jim, Abby and Willy. 10 Great grandchildren ; and 2 Great Great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Memorial service will be held on December 29th , 2017 at 11:00 am at Sunrise Funeral Home 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy. Memorial Donations can be made to Angel of Hope Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Diamond Willow Assisted Living for the care and kindness they provided during Betty's stay.
