Odie Powell Obituary
Odie Powell, 84, of Duluth passed away peacefully Thursday, June 20, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on July 21, 1934 to Odie and Eula Powell in Stroud, OK.
Odie grew up in Fresno California and married the love of his life, Mary Silas on April 4, 1959 in Plattsburgh, New York. He attended Washington High School in Fresno, University of Maryland, University of Oklahoma, and St. Scholastica in Duluth.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1972. He worked at Northwood Children's Home as a counselor. He worked for the city of Duluth as an Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, retiring in 2001.
Odie enjoyed listening to Jazz music and was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed playing football, tennis, racquetball, and basketball. He was past president of the Institute of Afro-American Awareness, NAACP, AARP, board of the American Red Cross, Young Old Timers Seniors Club, and the Northland Vietnam Veterans Association. He was also an ordained deacon at former New Hope Baptist Church and Sunday school superintendent. At Calvary Baptist Church he served as the treasurer of the board of deacons.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lance Powell; father, Odie Powell Sr.; mother, Eula (Powell) Howell; step-father, Joe Howell; and brothers, John and Dwyane.
Odie will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary; and sister, Alnetta Lacy of Los Angeles, CA.
Visitation: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller trunk Highway, Hermantown. The visitation will continue from 12:00 noon until the 1:00 p.m. funeral service Thursday, June 27, 2019 at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery.
