Marilyn Bohne Obituary

Teacher - Missionary - Inspirer -
Wife - Mother - Grandmother - Friend

Marilyn Joyce Bohne, age 89, of Superior, WI, entered into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Superior Rehabilitation Center in Superior. She passed with a peaceful smile on her face, attesting to the close presence of the Lord in her life.

Marilyn was born October 5, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Helen Kortum. She came to faith in Christ as a young girl and felt a calling on her life to become a missionary. She graduated from Amundsen High School in 1948 and attended Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota. There she met a young mathematics professor, Quentin Bohne, and they were married June 3, 1950. They set up home in Minneapolis, then in Bellevue, Washington, and were blessed with four children: Bruce, Lauralyn, Brian, and Brent. She earned her B.A. in Education in 1967 (Bethel College) and a Master's degree in ESL from the University of Minnesota in 1972. She had a lifelong love of languages, speaking English, Spanish, German, and Korean.

Marilyn was widowed at age 36, raising her children on Peltier Lake in Minnesota while finishing her degrees. She then taught English/ESL at Bethel, to Native Americans in Phoenix AZ, in Twin Cities adult education programs and worldwide--Korea, Kenya, Central African Republic, Mexico, Thailand, and China. Her "honorary Korean sons" have stayed in touch over the years. World missions and travelling with family were values she passed on. Highlights included African safaris, and travelling with to Brazil with Brian, to Alaska with Lauri, and to several overseas posts with Brent and family including Israel, Uzbekistan, and Germany.

People of all backgrounds, colors, and languages were always welcomed into her home, where her open heart was evident. She enjoyed Scripture memory, writing, dramatic reading and storytelling. Marilyn treasured family times, especially horseback rides, holidays, trips and cultural events. Many things brought her joy-Collie dogs, horses, beautiful music, clouds, and hugs of her great grandchildren. She was a devoted church member, serving at Galilee Baptist, Bethlehem Baptist, and Bethany Community Church. In her final year, many caregivers were blessed by her kindness, love for the Lord, joyful spirit, and constant radiant smile.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Quentin; and parents, Robert and Helen.

Marilyn is survived by three sons, Bruce, Brian (Kate), and Brent (Primrose); daughter, Lauri (Randy) Brodeen; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, July 6th at Bethany Community Church, 6700 Grand Ave, Duluth. A private family interment will be held later at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials will be given to missions/international ministries, Bethel University, and her local church. Cards may be sent to Bethany Community Church.
