Katherine Juntunen Obituary
Katherine Ann ‘Kathy' Barthol Juntunen, age 82, died from pneumonia that turned to sepsis on December 18, 2018 in Arizona.
She was born December 2, 1936 in Duluth to Clarence and Esther (Gustafson) Barthol. She lived in the Pike Lake area and graduated from Hermantown High School. Katherine attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and Carey Gaspard Business School. She worked for the American Red Cross and retired from the Esko Elementary School in 1995. Katherine married Wilbur Juntunen in September 1957 and moved to Esko, where she resided for over forty years. She was a former member of St. Matthew's Church, Ruth Circle, Esko Lion's Club and Girl Scout troop leader. She enjoyed many winters at Valle Del Oro Resort in Mesa, Arizona where she volunteered with the Sunshine Committee and Friday Taco Salads. Katherine enjoyed camping, traveling, music, family and friends. After relocating to her childhood home, she attended Hermantown Community Church. In Mesa, Katherine would worship at Generation Church and the VDO Chapel.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James, Wilbur, and son-in-law, Mark Eckhardt, Jack Byers and Wayne Stone.
Katherine is survived by her daughter, Kimberly of Fergus Falls, MN; and grandchildren, David, Jonathan (Kari), Hannah and Matthew as well as special nephew Tim Brandon. She was a foster parent to Roger and Gail Juntunen and a special friend to Laura Zempel, Kim's sister.
