Dan Helm Obituary
Dan James "Boom" Helm, age 68, of Eden Prairie, MN, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 14, 2018, at his apartment. Dan was born in Duluth, MN to Herbert George Jensen and Barbara Elaine Jensen née Ringsred on June 16, 1950.
Dan was adopted, raised, and deeply loved by his father Dr. Wayne Gene Helm.
Dan graduated from Grace Davis High School in Modesto California in 1967. He went on to attend Modesto Junior College, Palmer Junior College, and the University of Minnesota Duluth where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1971.
Dan continued his education by accomplishing several additional degrees in History, Business, Economics, and Math, graduating a second time from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2001.
Dan entered the United States Marine Corps in 1973, where he served as a Communications Officer, Training Officer, and unit Commander before leaving service at the rank of Captain in 1978.
During his lifetime, Dan owned and operated several businesses: Y*NOT Restaurant, Hazimat Professional Cleaning Service, and Profitmaker Business Systems, a software programming company.
Dan's love of technology would prove to become his lifelong passion and career working 34 years in the industry in numerous positions including: Programmer, IT Support, Network Specialist, IT Security Analyst, and Support Engineer.
At the time of his death, Dan was working for Oracle as a Senior Support Engineer MCSE, CNE(4,5,6), CCNA, Security+, ITIL, OCA, A+.
Dan enjoyed spending time at the cabin, diving, chess, politics, law, medicine, science, history, and was a voracious reader his entire life.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Wayne Helm and Barbara Elaine Helm née Ringsred; and birth father, Herbert George "TC" Jensen.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Tara Lee Powers; grandson, Eli Murphy Powers; sister, Janice Barbara Sornberger; brother, Dale Arthur Helm; step-mother, Karen "KD" Jenson; step-sister, Denise Marie "Dinger" Jenson; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at NOON on Saturday July 28th at Park Hill Cemetery Chapel, 2500 Vermilion Rd, Duluth, MN. Military honors and burial will follow the service in Park Hill Cemetery.
