Ellen Heino Obituary

Ellen Heino, 91, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017 after a short stay at North Shore Estates in Duluth, MN.

Ellen Evangeline was born on January 6, 1926 in Virginia, MN to Victor and Anna (Hanson) Lundberg. The family lived on a small farm in Buyck, MN, where they raised chickens and Brown Swiss cattle. There they also raised their two children, Edith and Ellen. Victor was a St. Louis County road maintenance operator and Anna, a homemaker.

Ellen attended elementary school in Buyck, MN and graduated from Orr High School in 1944. Reflecting the changing times, after Ellen's graduation she and Edith traveled together to Duluth in order to attend secretarial school and begin careers, with Ellen finding work first with the Diamond Match Company and then working side-by-side with Luigino "Jeno" Paulucci, the well-known food entrepreneur. She spent several exciting years working at Chun King during its early operation, and learned about business from one of the best.

Edith, Ellen's much-loved sister, died at the age of 28 on July 18, 1952 after struggling since childhood with severe asthma, a loss that was never forgotten. On December 27 of that year, however, Ellen was united in marriage to Roy Walfred Heino, who adored her throughout their life together, sharing interests and adventures and supporting her numerous talents. She was his "doll-baby", and he was the love of her life.

Until their retirements, Ellen and Roy lived in Duluth, living for a time on Island Lake and Fish Lake before building a home in the country near Culver, MN, near the Cloquet River in 1967. From this point onward, Ellen and Roy were free to indulge their passions, such as driving the Circle Route around Lake Superior to gather agates. Ellen was a self-taught, highly accomplished artist and artisan, creating jewelry out of natural and cut stones as well as designing and making countless stained-glass lamps and windows while repairing and restoring stained glass items for others. Avid and savvy collectors of art and antiques, Ellen and Roy traveled across the country to attend antique and fine art auctions, purchasing high-quality art glass for her projects. She also had a soft spot for teddy bears, creating articulated versions for friends and family.

Ellen loved animals, especially birds, chipmunks, and dogs. Her yard was alive with wildlife and she enjoyed feeding and watching them come and go, with chippies, goldfinches, and hummingbirds being her most loyal visitors. She loved flowers, especially purple ones, and in recent years kept many large cauldrons of water lilies of numerous colors on and around her deck, complete with small frogs that she tended as carefully as her flowers. Her grand-nieces' dogs loved to visit, as there was always a welcoming lap and numerous treats from Ellen's hand under the table. She actively supported many animal rescue operations including the National Audubon Society, SPCA International Global Animal Rescue, The World Wildlife Fund, and the Nature Conservancy.

Ellen also loved her family and friends, and was a hero and role model to many who knew her. She knew that beautiful things fed the soul, and was never too busy to show little girls a lovely piece of jewelry or explain just why a particular piece of red glass was so perfectly red. She also believed that beautiful things were to be touched and used, and so set her table, even for visiting toddlers, with her Franciscan. (She was also never too worried about whether three or four cookies might ruin someone's supper.) Intensely private and fiercely independent, she was nonetheless a dear and generous person, with an understanding of what was important in life, a way with a story and a great sense of humor - her smile and the twinkle of her eye will be missed by many. Ellen helped many people in times of need, expecting nothing in return, with a generosity and kindness that will always be remembered.

Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy; sister, Edith; and uncles, Harold, Albert, Carl Martin, Robert, and Arthur.

Ellen is survived by her cousins, Margaret (William), Carla, Elsie, and their families; numerous friends, and special friends: Shawn Evenson, Penny Perry, Ronald Grimmius, Sharon Layon, and Dr. Neil Nelson.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the caring staff at North Shore Estates, who grew to know and love Ellen in her short time with them.
