Stuart Sievert Obituary

STUART ELMER "STU" SIEVERT Stuart Elmer "Stu" Sievert died Friday, June 3, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, after a challenging but brief struggle with cancer. Stu was born Nov. 6, 1936 in Brooten Minn. to Elmer Frank Sievert and Esther Anna (Wenlund) Sievert. He attended Grove Lake grade school, and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1954. Following graduation, he was employed briefly as a lineman for a telephone company. In 1956, he began working for Northern Pacific Railroad, which was the start of a "very interesting" 36-year career with the Northern Pacific, Burlington Northern, and Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroads. Working in a variety of capacities, he retired in 1992 as the General Forman of the Mechanical Dept. in Superior, Wis. at the BNSF Railroad. His proudest achievement, begun in 1983 and completed in 1985, was helping to design and build the first complete, automatic-fueling and lubricating diesel locomotive engine for the Burlington Northern Railroad. In Stuart's own words, his career was one that he "would not trade for anything!" Stu married Lorraine Ethel "Becky" McCarthy on December 9, 1988, after a lengthy and committed long-distance romance. He enjoyed collecting railroad artifacts and memorabilia, and relaxing, tinkering, and hunting at their cabin in Wascott, Wis. A talented woodworker, Stu took pride in crafting toys, walking sticks and other fun and useful projects for family and friends. His favorite activities included playing golf with his buddies, and spending family time with his beloved bride, Becky and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stuart is preceded in death by his father, Elmer; his mother, Esther; and his brother, Stanley. He is survived by his wife, Becky; children Paul McCarthy, Theresa McCarthy, David McCarthy, and Gary McCarthy; daughter-in-law Amy McCarthy; grandchildren Sara, Theresa, David Jr., Daniel, Breanna, and Brandon; great-grandchildren Alaina, Amelia, Aubrey, Eli, Amira, Alexis and Ezra; sister-in-law, Irene Sievert; nephews David Sievert, Mark (Amy) Sievert, and Tim (Becky) Sievert. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the physicians, nurses, and staff at St. Luke's Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care of Stuart throughout these past months. We will be forever grateful for their assistance and guidance to our family on this difficult journey.
