A Unger Obituary

A Duane Unger passed away on April 25th, 2015 after a brief but courageous fight against cancer in Henderson NV. Born in Lincoln, Il, he traveled the world with the US Air Force touching base with family and friends when he came ststeside. A 3 year stint at the Duluth Airbase helped him to decide to adopt Duluth as his new home. When Duane retired from the service as a Master Sargent, he was hired by the city of Duluth as a 911 operator. He jokingly informed the interviewer the only holidays he needed off were the opening weekends of fishing and hunting.   When 911 went from city to county, Duane and his wife retired to the Milwaukee area. After several years there, they retired again this time to the warm weather area of Henderson NV. While living in Duluth, Duane was active in several community organizations. He enjoyed his work with organizations such as AAD Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite, the Masonic Lodge and United Northern Sportsman's Club. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Alice Unger; his stepfather, William; his son Roger McKenzie; his great grandson Corey Roloff; and his sister-in-law Elsbeth Unger. A child of a blended family, Duane himself became the head of a large blended family. Duane is survived by his wife of 42 years Angeline; his brother Charles Unger, Bloomington Il; his sister Suzanne (Herb) Thompson, Kankakee Il; his children Helen (Gary) Gronlund, Duluth; Sherry (Lance) Adams, Terry Unger and Donald Unger all of Minneapolis area; Wendy (Larry) Lindberg, Donald McKenzie, and daughter-in-law Marcie McKenzie all of the Milwaukee area. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. One of his finial resting places will be in Sunrise memorial Park in Hermantown MN overlooking the woods and pond.
